4 Tips to Improve Your Handwriting

If your handwriting is barely legible even to you, then newsflash – it is bad! Given how digitalisation has eliminated the need to improve your handwriting, it doesn’t mean that you shouldn’t. So if you’re frustrated at the way your pen spews words on a paper and you’re unhappy with the way it looks, you can give your muscle memory a reboot and learn to do it the right way all over again. When you read ahead, you are likely to discover that you’ve been doing some things the wrong way which obviously reflects on the way you write!

So, in this piece together we’ll make a conscious effort to give your handwriting a complete makeover and hopefully you’ll soon have a brand new handwriting, one that you’ll be proud of!

1. Set your goal

We all have had our moments in school days, especially when a certain teacher complained or made a joke of our handwriting in front of the entire class, don’t we? Well, everybody laughed and maybe you chuckled a little bit too as you weren’t the only one. And maybe it’s because of those funny moments; you never thought of improving your handwriting. Well, not anymore. You see, it is neither too difficult nor too late to change an old habit if you have the will and determination to do it. So, set your goal and bear in mind that you have to focus only on improving your handwriting from here on.

2. Get a quality pen

“The pen is mightier than the sword.”

This great quote from Edward Bulwer-Lytton will stand true for years and years to come. Just like you won’t enter a battle with a rusty old sword, you won’t be able to improve your handwriting by using a cheap pen. And just because we told you so, you don’t have to go out and buy a luxurious fountain pen embedded with diamonds, unless you are someone who runs high-end corporate business.

A perfectionist may tell you that fountain pens are far more superior, but there are many good ballpoints, felt tips, roller balls and even promotional pens, which if used properly will help you in your quest to transform your handwriting. To finally settle on a pen of your choice, it is recommended that you try pens with differently sized nibs and find out which one caters best to your needs.

3. Get a good grip

Now, having a pointy end on the other side doesn’t mean you should hold your pen like a sword. To reduce the tension getting built up among your fingers during writing, you should have a nice grip on your pen. You don’t have to squeeze your pen very hard to improve your handwriting. Just hold it firmly and comfortably and let the inky oblivion guide you.

Also, when you are writing, don’t press your pen too hard on the paper. As long as you feel that the pen is perfectly balanced and comfortable in your hand, it doesn’t matter which fingers you use to hold it.

4. Correct your posture

Your posture should be such that you’re completely at ease and are sitting in a relaxed manner. Also while writing something, when you reach the last line of page, move your notes up instead of moving your hand down. After you have found a comfortable writing position concentrating on producing the best handwriting will become far easier.

Take short breaks from time to time as sitting in one position at a stretch, isn’t good. . Experts suggest that your writing surface should have a 45˚ angle, as it aids you to write in a proper manner. Also, ensure that your writing space is free of any clutter so that you can move your hand freely while you write.

At the end of it, it all boils down to how much and how diligently you practice your handiwork. A few minutes every day should be enough to get you closer to your goal of making an improvement. Write on post-its and sticky notes or use a notepad instead of using a smart device or a computer program. Start maintaining a journal and make it a point to write in it regularly. These small changes will go a long way in making your handwriting better.
